And that is, we love Alex’s Place in Batavia, New York, site of our 2016 National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards jury. Our chapter was tasked with jurying entries for the newspaper comic strip division, and we undertook it with due diligence and great food. Shown below are four of our esteemed jurors, NCS Upstate NY Chapter members all: Jason Yungbluth, Graham Nolan, Scott Jensen and Frank Mariani. Not shown is fellow juror Ron Ferdinand.

The first event of the year for the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society was a research trip to the Syracuse University Library Special Collections seminar room, where the amazing staff had arranged a jaw-dropping collection of great original art and papers from some of the legendary cartoonists whose work they have collected. We but scratched the surface on this visit, and look forward to another visit to this honey pot of inspirational  work. In this photo from our visit, I’m shown with Washington Post Group comics editor Amy Lago and NCS member Graham Nolan. The work in front of us includes an original Thomas Nast drawing.

Surprisingly, it’s me. Succeeding Graham Nolan in December, I look forward to a fun year with a fun bunch of cartoonists.

Or at least to East Aurora, NY. Once again, the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Cartoonist Society was tapped to judge a category for the annual awards (aka the “Reubens”). This year we looked at editorial cartoons – and what a category it was. Amazing talent was evident throughout the many entries received; this was NOT an easy job, even for the sturdy crew shown above: Frank Mariani, our gracious host Graham Nolan, Randy Elliott, yours truly, Sandra Bell-Lundy (who joined us from Canada), and Jason Yungbluth. The three finalists will be announced in a few weeks, and the winner will be announced at the NCS Awards Reuben Awards this May, in San Diego, CA.
